UCLA Defeats Shanghai Sharks 92-63

Aug 28, 2012 6:07 PM

UCLA finished their three-game China tour with a 92-63 win over the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association on Tuesday.

Travis Wear had 26 points to lead UCLA, while Kyle Anderson had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Adams had 18 points and Tyler Lamb had 15.

“I think that we have a very good recruiting class that’s coming into our program – three of the players were here with us in China," said Ben Howland. "We have a very good group of returning players who learned a lot from last year. We have very high expectations to be successful going into this season. Our number one expectation is to try and win the Pac-12. Winning the Pac-12 automatically gets you a berth to the NCAA Tournament.”

UCLA met with Yao Ming following the game.

Muhammad, Anthony Davis Perceived As Having 'Dirtiest Recruitments' Over Past Decade

Aug 22, 2012 10:31 AM

Shabazz Muhammad and Anthony Davis were voted by nearly 100 colleges as having the 'perceived dirtiest recruitment' over the past 10 years.

Muhammad received 15 percent of the vote, while Davis received 13 percent.

John Wall, Kyle Anderson and O.J. Mayo received seven percent apiece, followed by Derrick Rose at six percent.

“This deal was done for a long time," said one coach about Muhammad's situation with UCLA. "The other rumors and stuff were just smoke and mirrors. People on the inside knew this deal was done. I mean, he turned Kentucky down.”

Kentucky's ability to secure Davis also drew suspicions.

"I've never seen a recruitment get shut down as quickly as that one got shut down," said one coach. "I don't know how they did it. But it was a strong play."

Anderson committed to UCLA before Muhammad.

“A kid doesn't go across the country to a school that doesn't fit his style of play – and turn down some of the top East coast schools – without it being unfair," said a coach. "It doesn't make sense from a basketball standpoint.”

Howland Plans For UCLA To Use Two Lead Guard Lineup

Aug 20, 2012 9:47 PM

Ben Howland has been playing Larry Drew and Kyle Anderson in the same lineups.

“It’s really fun to watch,” Howland said. “They’re two guys that can pass, that like to pass, and can really see the floor. Offensively, those two guys together are going to do well when they’re in.”

Drew transferred from North Carolina midway through his junior year.

“Larry’s got something to prove,” Howland said. “He’s got a lot of doubters out there after the way things went.”

Maryland Zeroing In On Recruitment Of Roddy Peters

Aug 17, 2012 10:49 AM

Roddy Peters has seemingly become Maryland’s top priority for the 2013 class.

The 6-foot-4 point guard from District Heights (Md.) took an official visit to College Park earlier this week.

“It went really good. I liked it,” said Peters, whose rapid summer ascent landed him as a consensus top-50 recruit. "They took me around to see everything, I got to see the dorms, talked to a couple of the players (Nick Faust and Pe’Shon Howard), met the trainers … They just said that they really want me at Maryland. That’s what (my mom) liked. Coach (Mark) Turgeon told me he really wanted me. She likes them.

“He told me how I can come in and be a point guard, how he thinks I fit the style,” he continued. “Of course, they were all saying that I should commit, but I still want to weigh my options.”

Peters is also considering Georgetown, Xavier, UCLA, Memphis and Rutgers.

“At first everyone thought I would commit [when Maryland offered], but I have all types of schools now. It’s really all about where I’m most comfortable,” he said. “I’ve got some thinking to do. I think I’ll commit during basketball season.”

Xavier Rathan-Mayes Focusing On Six Schools

Aug 16, 2012 10:42 AM

Xavier Rathan-Mayes is focused on six schools at this point in his recruitment.

“It’s tough,” Rathan-Mayes’ stepfather, Tharon Mayes said. “He’s getting calls from everywhere. I think he’s finally got it down to five or six schools he’s interested in.”

Those schools are Florida State, UConn, Memphis, Baylor, Alabama and UCLA.

Rathan-Mayes has already taken an unofficial visit to UConn, but Tharon is wary of whether Jim Calhoun will return for the 2013-14 season.

“It’s a concern,” Tharon said. “He likes Kevin Ollie. Kevin’s been speaking to him, it’s definitely a school of interest. But that is something that’s a little scary.”
